Character:
The main character is Mrs Foster. She had an almost pathological fear of missing a train, a plane and a boat. When she’s nervous, the muscle in the corner of her left eye begins to twitch, like a secret wink. It stops when she caught a train, plane or boat safely, but after an hour.

In the beginning:
The book explains what is wrong with Mrs Foster but that she isn’t a particularly nervous woman, but the mere (alleen al) thought of being late on occasions like a plane, boat or whatever would throw her into such a state of nerves that she would begin to twitch. Then the book tells you about Mrs Foster is leaving her home an half an hour before it was time to go to the station. Mrs Foster would step out of the elevator all ready to go, with hat and coat and gloves, and then, being quite unable to sit down. She has to wait for her husband to come and say that they better have to get going now.

At the end:
Exactly six weeks after she had arrived, she sent a letter to her husband and caught the plane back to New York. Its possible that she might even have been a little amused. When she arrived at her house, she rang. She waited but there was no answer. Just to make sure, she rang again. But still no one came. She took out her own key and opened the door herself. The first thing she saw as she entered was a great pile of mail lying on the floor. The place was dark and cold.
