The main character of this novel is Mike. Mike’s a young news reporter of 19. He works for a friend of his father at a newspaper. He lives in new York, has a girlfriend called Jane and a brother called Lyle.

Explanation of the title:

The title of this novel is The Third Brother. In part I of the novel Mike must go to Hong Kong for a story, but besides that he has to search for a lost reporter called Christopher Dorr, a lost friend of his father and his fathers friend Elliot Analect. That’s the third brother in part I. Part II of the novel is about Mike a year later living in New York again, where his brother gets crazy, is on drugs, and hallucinates things. That hallucinate person they call the third brother in part II.

Explanation of the main theme:

The main theme of my novel is Thriller and Drama, because there is much tension in part I, and much drama in part II of the novel.

Summary:

Mike has to go to Thailand to work on an assignment he got from his boss Elliot Analect to write a story about backpackers and drugs. But he must also find the lost friend of his father and boss, Christopher Dorr. He is flying with his companion and colleague Bishop to Hong Kong. When they arrived there Bishop set him off at the hotel and he said he was going to see his ‘best girl’. Mike conquers many experiences, goes to clubs to talk with backpacker for his story. Then he went on the back of a motorcycle to .44 bar, when he met ‘the flying circus’. Four other good journalists called Mickey Burton, Bridget, Paul and Harrison. He becomes friends and they all get high on weed. They meet Tweety, a Thai hooker and translator, in Hotel the Grace. Mike goes together with Bridget and Paul to a sexbar, there they meet Tweety again. Mike and an American get in a fight about Tweety, they fight. A police lieutenant arrived together with Mickey Burton. They arrested the American and let Mike go. The police lieutenant appears to be Mike’s contact. After that Mike, Paul, Harrison, Burton, Tweety and Bridget went to Burtons house to smoke weed. The next morning Mike goes back to his hotel and after that to some clubs to ask backpackers some questions. In the meanwhile he’s got a note from Bishop where he had been waiting for. Mike concludes that he has enough information about the article and says he stops with asking backpackers questions. Mike is killing some time by going to the national gallery, where he meets two stoned tourists. They say Thailand is thé place for drugs. Back in the hotel he gets hungry and goes out to the McDonalds. There he meets Tweety again, she tells him she doesn’t want to work for Harrison and Mickey Burton anymore. The next morning Harrison came to pick up mike to see Christopher Dorr, as he promised. They went by bike. Mike knocks a couple of times on Dorr’s door and then the door opened. He came into a dark house, Dorr was sitting in a couch. This place could be the place of some drunk or junky. Dorr starts telling a vague story about births, and just in that time Dorr’s dog gave birth to some puppy’s. Then Mike left and went for Harrison’s motorcycle. Its in front of Tweety’s home, and just when Mike gets there Harrison, Tweety and Tweety’s brother walk out the door, with 4 police officers behind them with their pistols in hand. Tweety and her brother appeared to be drugs dealers. Harrison and Mike left of on the motorcycle and they heard 2 shots. They were killed. Mike gets sick, thinks of his experiences and he doesn’t want so see all of the people again.

Then suddenly, unexpected begins part II of the story.

It’s a year after Mike has been in Thailand. He’s is walking in New York and sees the plane of flight 11 fly into the World Trade Centre. When Mike was still in Bangkok, Thailand his parents died because of fire in their house. Mike’s brother, Lyle, got crazy and was on drugs. He was taking in to Pine Hill, a drug rehabilitation centre. When he was fired he still hallucinated, and Lyle called that hallucinations as their third brother. They both hate their third brother and Lyle thinks the third brother did set the house on fire. Mike get a cab to go downtown, because he want to search for Lyle. Then he sees the second plane fly into the WTC. In the cab he sees how another cab hits a guy on the sidewalk. From there he went on by foot. Still searching for his brother Jane called, she said her friend Suzy was at the 89th floor at her dad’s office. Probably both dead. Then Lyle called, he said he was on Church street, just north of the attack. Mike went there, and he gets flashes of people trapped in the building, seeing the plane come right at them and people jumping down. He sees Lyle and they both have the idea to get the hell out of there. They went to Lyle’s apartment. Lyle says to get up on the roof to watch the view, they did. Lyle said he had to tell Mike something. Their mother went crazy, shot their father and shot herself. Lyle set on the fire to cover it up, to protect mike. After he told that to Mike he said if Mike would get him some water. When Mike came back, Lyle had jumped.

Beginning of the novel:

The novel begins with a small introduction about Mike. Then chapter one is about that he works for a friend of his father, Elliot Analect. He gets the assignment together with Bishop to go to Bangkok, Thailand to make a story about backpackers and drugs and to see Christopher Dorr, and lost friend of Analect and his father.

End of the novel:

The novel ends with Mike searching for his brother Lyle, he finds him after a 3 hour walk downtown New York. There just had been a terrorist attack on the World Trace Centre. He finds Lyle after a while, goes home with him. They get on the roof of Lyle’s apartment and Lyle says he set their house on fire after their mother killed their father and herself. Just to cover it and protect his little brother. After Mike came back up from getting some water for Lyle, Lyle jumped.

Explanation of the climax:

I thought there were two climaxes in this book. The first one at the end of part I when Mike spoke to Dorr, and when Tweety and her brother got killed. Thought that was a climax because you don’t expect that to happen. Climax number two I thought was the moment that Lyle said he did set the house on fire in part II, and after that he jumped. A climax because it comes as a shock.
